Johannesburg - A charge under the Road Traffic Act laid against Mpumalanga traffic MEC Mohammed Bhabha has been withdrawn, and the MEC will pay the equivalent of the fine to charity.
In a media statement on Monday, the MEC's office said the Mbombela municipality had alleged that Bhabha had been following another vehicle too closely on May 3.
A meeting was held between Mbombela's municipal manager, Mbombela traffic officials and the MEC, at which it was agreed that the case against Bhabha could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
The charge was withdrawn, and Bhabha agreed to donate R1 000 - the equivalent of the fine that would have been imposed - to the municipality to give to a charity of its choice, the statement read.
Bhabha said he was glad "the matter was settled amicably and everything has been put to rest".
