School uniforms dropped
05/09/2003 07:52 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The government has officially decided to do away with school uniforms, the SABC reported on Friday.
Mosibudi Mangena, the deputy minister of education, has told the South African Principals' Association in Polokwane that a committee is already attending to the matter.
Mangena said uniforms are too expensive.
"We know that uniforms are expensive, especially for the poor parents. But we also know that even some middle class parents find it the issue of uniform quite hard to deal with."
Mangena added that in certain instances parents spent close to R5 000 on school uniforms.
