Spittal murder charge withdrawn

Johannesburg - The state on Friday withdrew all charges against William Collin Spittal in the Johannesburg High Court in connection with the June 2001 murder of his wife, Shirley.
Spittal was on trial with three others on charges of murder and aggravated robbery.
Their indictment read that Spittal had ordered the killing of his estranged wife.
She was stabbed 21 times in her Weltevreden Park home.
State advocate Johan van Wyk on Friday asked the court to withdraw all charges but provided no details.
Shirley's sister, who was in court, wept at the news as the four accused hugged each other in the dock.
