Woman stabbed in burning flat

Vereeniging - A Vereeniging man was arrested on a murder charge after police found him in the bedroom of his apartment with the blood-soaked body of his girlfriend, Vaal Rand police said on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Thabo Seete said police were called to an apartment block in Leslie Street, Vereeniging, on Friday afternoon where residents had reported smoke coming from one of the flats.
Seete said police gained entry into the smoke-filled flat and found the man in the bedroom standing over a smouldering mattress on which lay the body of his girlfriend. She had been stabbed 16 times.
The man will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Monday.
