Coega claims another 'victim'

2003-11-24 20:39

Port Elizabeth - The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) on Monday announced that another worker had been hurt by falling scaffolding at the Neptune Interchange that is part of the infrastructure of the Coega Industrial Development Zone near Port Elizabeth.

Moshishi Frans Rammai was admitted to a Port Elizabeth hospital on Friday, the CDC said in a statement.

His condition has been described as stable. He is under medical supervision at St George's Hospital with a fractured temple. He was hit on the by a shutter that fell as he and colleagues were putting it in place.

The shutter was used for pre-casting the front of a stormwater drain with concrete, the CDC said.

The accident is the second on the Neptune interchange construction site in just more than a week. On November 13, two men were killed and 20 injured when scaffolding supporting formwork at a bridge construction collapsed.

Results are still awaited

"The CDC will work with the contractor and the labour union to investigate the possible causes of the accident as well as ways of preventing similar occurrences.

Moshishi worked for one of the companies subcontracted to Rumdel Construction, one of the joint-venture partners of Ibhabhathani Consortium," said the developer.

Results of the first investigation into the accident at the Neptune interchange bridge site have not yet been released.

Independent initial investigations by the CDC, the consulting engineers and the contractor have been completed but will be released only in conjunction with the labour department's results.
