Sadtu against fee increases
24/11/2003 22:23  - (SA)

  • WCape: Keep school fees down
  • School fees to remain intact
  • Johannesburg - A teachers union said on Monday it would campaign against a reported increase in school fees at Model C schools, and urged Education Minister Kader Asmal to probe spending patterns at these schools.

"We will campaign that any increases in school fees be stopped," said Thulas Nxesi, the general secretary of the SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu).

"These increases serve only to further exclude many learners from getting a quality education."

He said Sadtu was convinced the increases did not improve the quality of education and should be stopped.

It was reported school fees in Section 21 schools, of which the majority are former Model C schools, were to increase between 7% and 45%.

"These increases are above the inflation rate, said to be at 6.3%," Nxesi said.
