Pietermaritzburg - A taxi driver caught speeding at 144 km/h in a 100 km/h zone - with a full load of passengers - has been arrested and granted bail of R3 000.
Duncan Gumede, 25, from Umlazi will appear in the Scottburgh magistate's court on Monday, said Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Rajen Chinaboo.
Since December 1, RTI officers have charged motorists for a total of 25 526 traffic offences, suspended 588 unroadworthy vehicles and arrested 375 drivers.
"Of 246 drivers who appeared before the magistrate at the Cato Ridge Roadside Court, most offences are for speeding. The number of persons arrested for drunk driving stands at 212 since December 1, and is a cause for concern," he said.
