Johannesburg - Brendan Whittington-Jones, a South African game ranger working in Iraq, on Wednesday painted a grim picture of life for Westerners there.

This comes after Wednesday's car-bomb blast in Baghdad, which claimed the life of one South African and injured four others.

"I don't go out as it's not safe. They (terrorists) are attacking more and more Westerners," said Whittington-Jones.

According to him, the news of the South African's death spread through the city like wildfire.

Whittington-Jones said there were at least 150 South Africans in Baghdad.

"They work mostly as security officers or they are involved in the protection of important people.

"Others work at radio stations or in the internet industry. They are all over the city," he said.

"We try to avoid situations and places that can be dangerous. Some areas are safer than others.

"But, you try not to think of bombings. If it's your time, then it's your time," he said.

    - Beeld
