Pretoria - A Pretoria priest was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly being caught trying to smuggle dagga into a prison, the correctional services department said.

Correctional Services spokesperson Maupi Monyemangene said the priest was going to hold his regular church service at Zonderwater Prison when six small plastic bags containing dagga were allegedly discovered in his bag.

The officials made this discovery when conducted their routine search on people visiting the prison, said Monyemangene.

According to Monyemangene the head of the prison, Norman Mkhwanazi, expressed dismay at the incident saying he was very disappointed as he had trusted the priest and believed he would help to rehabilitate the prisoners.

Monyemangene said the priest conducted a one-hour service every day and was also paid a small sum of money every month. He would appear in court soon.
