Johannesburg - Police on Thursday raided a Lenasia hotel south of Johannesburg and seized its guest register after recovering a car used in Wednesday's horror hijacking near Grasmere toll plaza.
Officers from the flying squad and the Vaal Rand anti-hijacking unit recovered a red Camry on Thursday afternoon in the parking grounds of the hotel.
The police raided the hotel for the three or four suspects wanted in connection with the Randburg family's hijacking in which a woman and a 14-year-old girl were raped after their vehicle was ambushed.
The family - a husband and wife and their niece - were on their way to the Eastern Cape when they were forced to take the Ennerdale turn-off at Grasmere toll plaza as the other N1 toll gates were apparently closed.
When they stopped at a stop street on the offramp, hijackers ambushed them.
Police later found the victims and they were taken to hospital. The woman and the teenager were immediately given antiretroviral drugs.
Waiting for closed-circuit video tapes
The 14-year-old was admitted to Garden City Clinic, but was discharged on Thursday.
According to inspector Trudie Wilken, forensic tests were being done on the car found at the hotel.
Police have taken the hotel's register to see whether the suspects spent the night there.
Police are still waiting for Intertoll, the company that manages the Grasmere plaza, to hand over closed-circuit video tapes. These and computer records concerning the toll gates and traffic lights will be studied.
Anyone with information on the incident has been asked to contact superintendent André du Plessis on 082 822 7675.
