Pretoria - Police were investigating charges and counter-charges between Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride and a former girlfriend involving a toddler.
Charges of assault and kidnapping were laid against McBride for allegedly snatching his daughter from the house of her mother, an ex-girlfriend, last Friday.
Police confirmed on Tuesday they were also investigating the toddler's mother for child abuse and neglect.
Superintendent Morné van Wyk said McBride lodged complaints of child abuse and neglect against his former girlfriend at Booysens in Johannesburg.
"The matter in its entirety is being investigated by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit in Pretoria," he said.
"Once the investigation is finalised, the docket will be presented to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for a decision."
Van Wyk declined to divulge any further information on the case.
According to McBride's lawyer, Jose Nascimento, the charges arose from his client removing his daughter, aged aged two-and-a-half, from her mother's care on Friday evening.
Nascimento would not elaborate on an apparent confrontation between McBride and his former girlfriend's new lover, which gave rise to the assault charges.
The child's mother could not be traced for comment.
McBride, a former foreign affairs official, was appointed metro police chief last year amid objections from several quarters.
