Johannesburg - Multi-platinum selling and award-winning gospel star Deborah Fraser faced death as she was hijacked outside Downtown Studios in Johannesburg on Monday.
Fraser was robbed off her Toyota RAV 4, and all its contents including her cellphone, ID and passport that she was to use for her London tour.
The gospel star says she was at the studios around 18:00 to add vocals on Paul Gwala's forthcoming album. "I was waiting for some people to return from the shops where they went
to buy airtime."
Two young men, around their twenties, opened both doors of her car and ordered her out. "One of them repeated the order as he cocked his gun.
"I calmly got out of the car, with the other guy pulling of my chains, before they sped off in the car."
Fraser says the attack happened very fast and that people standing across the road didn't see the drama unfold.
"If I had screamed they might have shot and killed me, but I thought my life was more important than the car," she said.
"I am still scared."
"I thank God for saving my life, and I won't hold a grudge against these boys who might have done this because of hunger. However, this calls on us as parents to be concerned about what our kids are doing.
"We see our children parking cars we know nothing about and we don't get concerned. We have to check what our kids are up to," she said.
Captain Schalk Bornman confirmed the matter was reported to the Johannesburg Central police station and being investigated by the Anti-hijack task team.
