Pretoria - The search is still on for a Pretoria couple reported missing on Wednesday morning, police say.

Rolf Deter Meier, 29, and his wife Alisan Jean, 42, disappeared after leaving their three-year-old son in the care of a domestic worker at their Villieria home early on Wednesday morning.

Friends and family of the couple went to their house later that morning after being unable to get hold of them, said police spokesperson Inspector Percy Morokane.

"They noticed that some personal items, like Mrs Meier's handbag, had been left behind, which raised their suspicions," he said. They then laid a missing persons complaint with the police.

The couple had not told the domestic worker where they were going, and did not pack any bags.

Morokane said their car, a blue Toyota Corolla, was found in Arcadia around noon on Thursday, "with still no sign of the couple".

A member of the public who recognised the car from a description over the radio spotted the vehicle and gave chase.

The driver abandoned the car and ran off.
