Fake traffic cops held
28/06/2004 21:58 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Two men impersonating traffic officers were arrested for trying to hijack a motorist near Kempton Park on Monday, police said.
A 44-year-old woman was pulled over to the side of the road by three men, one of whom was wearing a traffic officer's shirt, said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.
The men asked for her driver's licence, but while she was reaching for it they forced their way into her car and tried to push her out of the vehicle. One of them tried to strangle her, while threatening her with a firearm, said Kgasago.
A passing motorist realised something was wrong and turned around to assist the woman, at which two of the men ran away. The third man escaped in a car, said Kgasago.
Police were called, and started a manhunt with the help of the owners of a nearby farm.
Two men were caught, and police found a licensed firearm and an official traffic officer's shirt in their possession.
