Pupils hold teachers hostage
13/08/2004 18:47 - (SA)
East London - Police were called in to free teachers from Finomonde Primary School in Fort Grey informal settlement on Friday after they were held hostage by pupils and residents.
Captain Mtati Tana said the teachers had been accused by pupils of mismanaging school funds.
They first approached the deputy-principal who said the principal, who was absent, was the only one who worked with the money.
When they failed to get any answers they locked the teachers in a classroom and warned they would be released only once the media had been told about the problems at the school.
Police were called in and, after speaking to the media, pupils and residents released the teachers, said Tana.
