04/09/2004 22:25 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Western Cape police on Saturday destroyed 1 100 firearms that were handed in voluntarily or confiscated.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Riaan Pool said this brought the number of guns destroyed since September 2003 to 5 138.
He said police destroyed guns from time to time to recycle the metal contained in them.
Since April 2003 a total of 6 485 firearms and 1 429 468 rounds of ammunition were confiscated in the Western Cape. During the same period 967 people were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Pool said police test the firearms before destroying to ensure they were not used in crimes that were still under investigation.
