Polokwane - Police are trying to trace the relatives of an armed robbery suspect who was killed while allegedly trying to rob a pensioner of his money.
The suspect is believed to be one of four men who attacked a 58-year-old pensioner at his home at Mankweng near Polokwane at about 01:00 on Sunday.
Inspector Peter Mailula for Mankweng police said: "The old man has been robbed of his pension money before and was prepared to fight back this time."
He said the old man had put a car's shock absorber in the same bag as his money so, when the robbers asked for it, he swung it at the nearest man, hitting him in the head and killing him.
The three other men ran away.
The pensioner shouted for help and neighbours rushed to his aid. They called an ambulance for the injured suspect. However, he died before arrival at the hospital.
The pensioner handed himself over to the police.
Police opened an inquest docket instead of a murder charge when they checked their records and saw he had been robbed before, and was acting in self-defence.
