Johannesburg - Three inmates at Cape Town's Pollsmoor Prison died in a fire in their cell, SABC news reported on Friday.
Eddie Johnson, a correctional services spokesperson, said the inmates set a mattress and blankets in their cell alight.
The prisoners were already dead when rescue services put out the fire, he said.
Johnson said the three men were sentenced recently, but were still awaiting trial on other charges.
