  • Pretoria - A prison warder appeared briefly in the Pretoria district court on Thursday in connection with the deaths of two officials and two inmates in an attempted escape from C-Max high security jail.

Mlungusi Ishmael Msibi, 34, appeared almost arrogant as he walked into court and slumped into the dock.

He then looked around and waved at family members sitting in the front row of the public gallery.

C-Max prison head Sam Gomba and acting area co-ordinator Dan Ndinisa were shot dead in an escape bid by five inmates from the prison on Sunday morning.

Two of the prisoners, realising their bid for freedom was doomed, then committed suicide.

According to the preliminary charge sheet, Msibi is to face four murder charges.

More charges could be added depending on the outcome of the investigation.

    He was arrested on Monday.

The court ordered that Msibi remain in police custody until his next appearance on Thursday.
