Johannesburg - Contact visits at the Pretoria C-Max Prison have been suspended after a woman was caught trying to smuggle a cellphone into the prison, SABC television news reported on Saturday.
The report quoted Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour saying the cellphone was found in the woman's underwear when a body search was conducted on her.
"I have subsequently asked that contact visits be withdrawn immediately and we will deal with whatever litigation that comes our way," Balfour said.
Prison regulations forbid visitors handing over cellphones, cigarettes and firearms to prisoners, the report said.
The woman was arrested.
The SABC also said Balfour would next week announce when a task-team would commence on the probe into an escape attempt that left prison head Sam Gomba and acting area coordinator, Dan Nditisa, dead.
The two inmates, realising their bid for freedom was doomed, also took their own lives. A woman had allegedly smuggled the gun used into the prison.
