6 in court for perlemoen bust

Bethlehem - Six people appeared in Bethlehem regional court on Friday on charges relating to the seizure of perlemoen (abalone) with an estimated value of R2.6m.
Four Chinese nationals and two South Africans were arrested on Wednesday during a raid on an illegal factory outside Bethlehem.
Police arrived after a tip-off and found the factory in full production with perlemoen being cooked, dried, packed and some already in the process of being moved out.
The occupants of the house in the Eden area were arrested for illegally dealing in perlemoen and police seized equipment, 11 cellphones and a large amount of money.
Police confiscated 20 591 perlemoen from the factory that had been in operation for almost a year.
The case was postponed to November 26 for bail applications.
The accused are Gui Mei Fok, 31, Guo Rong Lui, 34, Zhong Jai Ming, 21, Chu Kai Ho, 25, Zondi Mabaso, 25, and Sipho Msingwane, 22.
