Mbeki meets I Coast leaders
20/11/2004 10:22 - (SA)
Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki will hold separate meetings with Prime Minister Seydou Diarra of the Ivory Coast and the head of the rebel forces in Pretoria on Saturday, a presidential spokesperson said.
Mbeki will meet with Diarra at noon, spokesperson Bheki Khumalo said.
Following this he will meet with leader of the rebel-held north Guillaume Soro, who arrived in South Africa on Saturday morning.
"This will complete the first round of consultations with President Mbeki in his efforts to broker peace in the country," Khumalo said.
In the last two weeks clashes between government, rebels, and the French military shattered an 18-month-old ceasefire in the West African country.
The once-peaceful West African country has been ripped apart by fighting between the rebel-held north, and the government-controlled south in the last few years.
Mbeki was asked to intervene by the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.
