Tombstones crush worker

White River - In a gruesome twist of fate, a tombstone maker was killed when five tombstones fell off a truck and crushed him.
Piet Mashego, who had worked in the tombstone industry for 15 years, was offloading the slabs, which weighed about 1 500kg, when they fell on top of him last week.
"It took an hour for a rescue team to lift the slabs off his body," said captain Benjamin Bhembe of Mpumalanga's Lowveld police on Wednesday.
One of Mashego's colleagues at Granite Artistic Tombstone in White River was badly injured and is recovering in hospital, while two others had only minor injuries.
A family representative, Sipho Mashego, said Piet Mashego would be buried at the weekend.
