Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki on Sunday night expressed sadness and sorrow following the devastating earthquake which has left more than 11 000 people dead in South East Asia.
In a statement issued by the department of foreign affairs, Mbeki said that South Africa was ready to do whatever it can to assist the stricken nations.
"The government and people of South Africa stand in solidarity with the peoples of your countries and region during these difficult moments.
"In this regard, South Africa stands ready to do whatever it can to assist in complementing efforts of your governments, region and the international community."
Earlier Rescue South Africa (RSA) and a trauma intervention team said they were ready to fly out to the earthquake stricken areas in Asia to offer assistance to victims.
Rescue South Africa's chief executive, Ian Scher said he was waiting to hear from the foreign affairs ministry whether a team needs to be assembled to fly out to Asia.
