Cape Town - "Hi, it's Koos. Thanks for trying to find me."
"I am back at home and have found myself in the process."
This was the message singer and writer Koos Kombuis sent to Die Burger newspaper on Friday morning to let them know that he was safely back with his family in Somerset West.
His wife, Esne - or Kannetjie as she is known - became worried when Kombuis left his house in the early hours of Thursday morning with his clogs and his guitar and did not return after a couple of hours.
Seen all over
She called the police and asked a local radio station to broadcast a message for her husband to contact her.
While Kombuis was calmly writing part of his new novel in a hotel room at the V&A Waterfront, the search gained momentum.
After the public was asked to call if they spotted her husband, Kannetjie was inundated by calls "particularly from old ladies" who firmly believed that they had seen Kombuis. He was allegedly spotted in Meiringspoort, Viljoenskroon, Fraserburg and even "outside Laingsburg".
Kombuis explained on Sunday that his two busy toddlers and a number of guests over the Christmas season made it impossible for him to work on his book at home.
That is why he left that night to go and write. He had quite a fright when he switched on his cellphone more than 24 hours later and heard that everyone was looking for him.
Judging by the message Kannetjie left on their cellphone on Friday, his disappearance took its toll on the couple.
"Thank you very much for everyone who supported us. We are both very tired and need some time together."
By Sunday, love and peace had apparently descended on the Kombuis household again.
A friendly Kombuis thanked the Somerset West police for their assistance and the priority they gave to the search, as well as the way they supported his wife.
When asked what he had to say about the whole affair, Kannetjie was heard in the background saying:"I am sorry that I abused my wife like that."
When asked how she would sum up the matter, her answer was short and sweet: "Never again!"
