Lekota praises museum seizure

  • Defence force 'looks foolish'
  • Museum staff released
  • 'Enough arms to raze Soweto'
  • Museum's army vehicles seized
  • Pretoria - Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota expressed gratitude to the military policing agency for uncovering war material at a Johannesburg military museum.

Speaking to media in Pretoria on transformation in the military, he initially refused to answer questions on last week's raid on the SA National Museum of Military History.

He later relented and said the matter was "work in progress".

"I haven't had the opportunity to scrutinise what happened and therefore cannot express an opinion. I can, however, say I am grateful the services were able to uncover this equipment and have it neutralised," he said.

Military police raid the museum in Saxonwold last week and arrested three staffers.

They seized three armoured cars and an infantry fighting vehicle and are currently investigating its origins.

The investigations are continuing with discussions between the military and the museum. The three arrested staffers were released without charge.
