Johannesburg - The military and museum officials agreed on Wednesday to resolve issues surrounding the keeping of arms at heritage sites through dialogue.

A statement by the chief of the military police agency and the Northern Flagship Institution (NFI) said the two parties, which met on Tuesday at the National Museum of Military History in Saxonwold, Johannesburg, were in agreement that the confiscation of four armoured vehicles last week had to be resolved amicably.

The NFI, which has previously said its paperwork for its exhibits were in order, said on Wednesday it would co-operate with the military police to ensure "that there is compliance in terms of acquisition processes and security at the museum".

The NFI and the military said they expected the outcome of the probe to initiate "a broader national process" regarding military collections and the relationship between museums and the military.
