Johannesburg - Two suspected robbers were wounded in a shootout with police in Tembisa on Wednesday.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman for police said on Thursday six men overpowered a family in Elardus Park, Pretoria, and held them at gunpoint while loading television sets, jewellery and other household goods into the family's Citroen and Toyota Corolla.
North Rand flying squad police on the lookout for the cars spotted them in Pretoria Road near Tembisa and gave chase.
One of the stolen cars stopped at an Engen garage, where the two occupants jumped out and pointed a gun at the police officers.
"The police officers opened fire on the two suspects, acting in self-defence.
"The suspects were seriously wounded, while the police officers were unharmed," said Opperman.
Police recovered stolen firearms and all the goods stolen from the Elardus Park home.
The other suspects were still at large.
