Pretoria - Two men were shot dead and two others wounded when a gunfight erupted during an attempted armed robbery at a convenience store on Monday night, Pretoria police said.
Eight men entered the One-Stop convenience store on Paul Kruger street in Capital Park about 20:00 and ordered the clients and shop owner to lie down, Inspector Percy Morokane said.
A queue marshal at the local taxi rank, who was in the store at the time, drew his gun and fired a warning shot.
"At this stage it's unclear who shot who," Morokane said.
One of the would-be robbers, in his early twenties, was shot dead. A bullet shattered the leg of a second robber. He was later arrested outside the store.
The 50-year-old marshal was shot in the neck and stomach and later pronounced dead by paramedics.
A 29-year-old man living across the street heard the shooting and went to investigate, taking his own pistol.
"For his troubles he was shot three times, in the chest, leg and arm," Morokane said. He was in a serious but stable condition at Pretoria Academic Hospital.
The other six men fled the scene empty-handed. Police investigations have established that they live in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
The injured robber, in his mid-twenties, is under police guard at Pretoria Academic Hospital.
The serious and violent crimes unit was investigating.
