Johannesburg - Police arrested 305 people in Hillbrow, of whom 196 were illegal immigrants, during crime prevention operations on Wednesday and Thursday morning.

"Police arrested 305 people for crimes including assault, fraud and attempted murder.

"The bulk of the arrests were illegal immigrants," police spokesperson Inspector Kriban Naidoo said.

Police seized suspected stolen property worth R12 000, including cellphones and computers.

Police confiscated two unlicensed pistols, 20 rounds of ammunition and a small quantity of heroin and Ecstasy.

Most of the arrests were made in the Berea, central Hillbrow and Joubert Park areas.
