Johannesburg - A man accused of releasing venomous snakes inside a bank last year pleaded not guilty on Monday to two counts of attempted murder.
Panic erupted in a branch of Absa in January 2004 when disgruntled client Abel Manamela allegedly released the snakes on the premises.
Amid fevered attempts to catch the creatures, a contract manager for Absa's cleaning company, Prestige, was bitten on a finger and had to undergo surgery.
In evidence in Johannesburg regional court on Monday, bank worker Patricia Magengenene told the court Manamela came into the branch in Absa Towers, and asked people to clear a space so he could release the snakes, reported the SABC.
She ran away, but then fainted, and went for counselling after the incident, Mangengenene told the court,
Manamela, who is out on bail of R5 000, is expected to stand trial until Wednesday.
