Youths kill holidaymaker
31/05/2005 18:57  - (SA)

Johanesburg - An elderly holidaymaker was shot dead and two others were wounded near Port St Johns on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.

Spokesperson Tembi Kinana said four elderly couples from East London were driving on the R61 when they came under fire from a group of youths at about 11:00 near Umngazi.

Cyntha Debrowski, 71, who was travelling with her husband and another couple in a double cab bakkie, was hit in the shoulder. She died on her way to the hospital.

Ivor Phillips, 69, and John Perks, 72, who were travelling with their spouses in a car behind double cab, were wounded in the arm and chest respectively.

They were taken to the St Mary's Hospital in Mthatha where they were reported to be in a serious but stable condition.

The youths shot at the vehicles "for no reason at all" and everything possible was being done to bring them to book, Kinana said.

He said a police helicopter had been called in to help in an extensive search for the attackers.
