SA wants to wipe out child porn
04/06/2005 10:28 - (SA)
Port Elizabeth - A national conference against child pornography ended near Port Elizabeth on Friday with the adoption of a strongly-worded declaration to stamp out the scourge.
The declaration committed civil society, government and the private sector to wipe out child porn, a statement issued by the Department of Home Affairs said.
"Delegates unanimously agreed that the creation, production, processing, and distribution of any pornographic material severely imposes untold misery to normal childhood development (sic)," the department said.
About 300 delegates attended the two-day event at the Coega Conference Centre.
With regard to awareness and public education, the Ministry of Home Affairs was mandated to intensify efforts aimed at protecting children from accessing harmful images through the media, including films, exhibitions, games, television, the internet and other publications.
"One of the resolutions taken at the conference is that Home Affairs should hold bilateral discussions with both the internet Service Association of SA and the mobile technology providers with a view to developing a joint programme of action aimed at combating the spread of child pornography," the department said.
