Cape Town - A woman is in the intensive care unit of the Nelson Mandela hospital in Umtata after she was shot in the stomach during a hijacking on Sunday night.
Annatjie Coetzee, 34, of Port St John's was travelling from Lutsikisiki when she was stopped and hauled from her 4x4.
She was shot in the stomach and left by the roadside.
Her attackers fled in her vehicle, leaving behind the Mazda they had hijacked earlier.
Coetzee crawled into nearby bushes in fear that her attackers might return.
Police arrived to investigate the hijacking of the Mazda earlier that day, when they heard her moaning in the bushes.
Police spokesperson Captain Tembinkosi Kinana told News24 on Tuesday police were still looking for three armed men who hijacked a Mazda from two brothers near Port St John's on Sunday evening.
Ephraim Mbuzo Kenku and his brother Kestile, 25, were offloading passengers near a spaza shop at Mampune outside Port St John's on Sunday evening.
They were approached by three armed men, who pulled Ephraim Kenku from behind the wheel.
Apparently Kenku's brother Kestile came to his brother's rescue and was shot and wounded in the leg.
A passer-by, Mpumzi Tshitsha, 22, who was on his way to or from the shop, was also wounded.
The suspects, who had earlier robbed the shop of cigarettes and other goods, sped away in the brothers' white Mazda.
The two injured men were treated at a health centre in Port St John's.
Kinana said while police were investigating the hijacking, they found Coetzee hiding in bushes.
Apparently the suspects had used the stolen Mazda to block the road. When Coetzee stopped her 4x4 vehicle, they hauled her out and shot her in the stomach.
She was admitted to Nelson Mandela Hospital in Umtata.
Coetzee apparently moved to Port St John's in January. Police are still searching for the stolen 4x4.
Several calls to Nelson Mandela Hospital on Tuesday morning yielded no response from spokesperson Sizwe Kopela or the hospital's superintendent.
