Cops 'attack' immigrants
20/06/2005 08:50  - (SA)

Johannesburg - Johannesburg police confirmed on Monday that several police officials were being investigated for robbing and attacking immigrants.

Police spokesperson Constable Sefako Xaba said the investigation - which is understood to have been under way for some time - had not been concluded.

The officials demanded money from Pakistanis and threatened to arrest them if they did not pay up, The Star reported on Monday, further alleging that they took the immigrants' passports and bank cards.

In one instance, The Star wrote, police ransacked the home of a man who had lived in South Africa for eight years, took his money then "tore up my holy book (Qur'an)" and threatened to kill him.

"This case is being investigated as we speak. When it is concluded we will take it to the public prosecutor, who will take a decision," Xaba told Sapa.

It was being investigated "like any other case" and no exceptions would be made because police were involved it would instead be "strongly monitored" for this very reason.
