Johannesburg - The number of babies who have died from the Klebsiella outbreak in Durban's Mahatma Gandhi Hospital has risen to 17, the KwaZulu-Natal health department said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Lindiwe Khuzwayo said two more babies died earlier this week.
"At this stage I can only confirm that two babies have died," said Khuzwayo.
"All I can say is that one baby was transferred to another hospital last week with the hope of recovering and I'm unable to comment yet on the two babies who are still in hospital."
Twenty babies contracted the Klebsiella bacterial infection in the hospital's neo-natal unit. The hospital became suspicious when several babies got ill on May 23.
