Rustenburg - Burglars have poisoned 130 dogs in Rustenburg in North West since the beginning of the year, according to police.
Two hawkers have been arrested in connection with selling a poison nicknamed "two step" because that's how many steps a dog is said to walk before dropping dead.
Frans Mbuti Ramogale, 32, and Gladys Mighty Senzo, 40, were arrested near a supermarket on May 31 when allegedly caught selling 10 grams of the poison.
They appeared in the Rustenburg magistrate's court on charges of possession of harmful substances. They were not asked to plead and will appear again next week, on August 4. They are out on warning until then.
Marico police spokesperson captain Elsabe Augoustides said the hawkers are accused of buying the poison for R15 and then dividing it into small plastic bank bags for sale on the street at R5 per bag.
The poison has been sent for forensic tests to identify it.
Augoustides said 130 dogs had been poisoned in suburban Rustenburg since January.
In March, 12 dogs were killed in one block in Geelhout Park Extension six in one week. In June, another six dogs were poisoned at Klooftuine.
Dogs were also poisoned in the suburbs of Safarituine and Protea Park.
