Bogus cops hijack courier van
29/06/2005 17:13 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Bogus metro police hijacked the employees of a courier company and took their van on the R59 freeway near Brackendowns, police said on Wednesday.
The burnt-out van was found in Bez Valley, east of Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon, said superintendent Andy Pieke of East Rand police.
He said the van driver and his colleague were forced to stop the vehicle by occupants of a car with flashing blue lights on Tuesday night.
"They alleged the two men who stopped them were wearing metro police uniforms and told them they had exceeded the speed limit."
The men asked the driver and his colleague to accompany them to the car. When they approached it they were met by another three men.
"These men threatened them with a firearm. The robbers then forced them into the veld and raced away with the car and the van."
Pieke said the freight - flowers and machine parts - appeared to have been removed before the vehicle was taken.
