Paris - Former President Nelson Mandela was created a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in a ceremony in Johannesburg on Tuesday, said the Paris-based organisation.
Unesco said: "Mr Mandela has been awarded the title in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the fight against apartheid and racial discrimination, in his country and worldwide, and his exemplary contribution to international peace and understanding."
Unesco director-general Koichiro Matsuura conducted the ceremony at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Mandela, who was imprisoned from 1962 to 1990, celebrates his 87th birthday next Monday.
