19/08/2005 13:39 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Armed men hijacked a truck driver's vehicle on the R23 near Balfour on Thursday evening and drove to a field where they tied him up, police said.
"Four occupants of a white Toyota bakkie overtook him and threatened him with firearms," East Rand police spokesperson inspector Prudence Mvelase said on Friday.
Three of them hijacked him and tied his hands and feet after driving away with him.
However, a motorist stopped his car when he saw the men brandishing firearms, and the hijackers ran away.
The truck driver, 37, untied himself and told the man what had happened.
He informed patrolling police, who quickly set up a roadblock.
"A 37-year-old suspect from Pietermaritzburg was arrested," Mvelase said.
He will appear in a special hijacking court in Springs on Monday.
Mvelase said the other three suspects were still at large.
Anyone who might have information about their whereabouts can contact East Rand hijacking unit at 011 617 4006.
