Delmas - In one of two farm attacks on Sunday 21 August in this area, robbers fled after an hour and a half when a victim began praying for herself as well as one of the thugs.

Three robbers were waiting for Boks Opperman, 63, and his wife Mariaan, 60, shortly after 10:30 at their house on the farm Weilaagte. Another robber, a woman, joined them soon afterwards.

Opperman said one of their sausage dogs had "barked frantically, but I thought he was just glad to see us."

"When we came in the front door, they (the robbers) rushed at us from the TV room... You come home from church in your suit and the next second everything is happening at once. Then there they were there with two revolvers and a shotgun."

"That barrel is as big as a cannon if it is in front of your head," an emotional Opperman said on Monday.

The robbers asked for firearms and Opperman walked - with a gun pushing into his back - to the safe in the bedroom. Then the robbers tied up the couple with nylon ropes in the bathroom.

''One of them showed me a penknife and said: 'I am going to kill your wife with this knife.' They kept on asking for money.''

They pulled a shirt over Opperman's head, shut the bathroom door and took his wife to the bedroom.

She began praying while one of them was talking to her. Then he asked her what she was doing. She told him: 'I am praying - for myself and for you.' When she said that, he told her she should remain seated and they left.''

They left with a revolver, a pistol, two cellphones, about R1 39;000 in cash, hunting guns and the keys to the safe.
