Johannesburg - A principal from Lenasia is behind bars after he allegedly faked his own hijacking and kidnapping over the weekend.

Edmund Pillay, 65, phoned his family on Saturday and said that he had been kidnapped and that his son should arrange the money for a ransom.

Superintendent Thembi Nkwa shu, police spokesperson, said Pillay led his family to believe that the alleged hijacking and kidnapping had something to do with his VW Jetta.

    His family alerted police.

Members of the Soweto police's unit for serious and violent crime traced Pillay by 12:00 on Monday and brought him home for questioning.

"He was arrested after we questioned him and it came to light that he had faked the kidnapping."

Pillay is expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate's court on a charge of obstructing the ends of justice on Tuesday.
