Motorists arrested in blitz
23/08/2005 13:01 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Johannesburg Metro Police had arrested 15 people at just one of several roving roadside checkpoints in the city by Tuesday morning, at the start of a two-week blitz on motorists with outstanding traffic warrants.
Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the city was still owed R280m in outstanding traffic fines - this even after the arrests of 14 958 motorists on outstanding traffic warrants since November last year.
Johannesburg metro police would be deploying 1600 officers for the 14-day crackdown, he said.
Drivers whose names showed up on the system would be shown an electronic copy of the warrant of arrest before being taken to the nearest police station.
They would be released either after paying, or appearing in court, said Minnaar.
He said the 15 arrests early on Monday were made at a checkpoint on Roodepoort Road, Soweto.
Cars were being pulled off the roads "at random" at other checkpoints all over the city, he said.
