FS police give hijack warning
28/08/2005 12:00 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Free State police warned motorists on Sunday to avoid giving strangers a lift as drivers are often murdered or victims of hijackings.
The warning followed an incident in the northern Free State on Saturday night when a man was shot and hijacked after he gave three unidentified men a lift.
Police spokesperson constable Christopher Mophiring said a 32-year-old man employed at a mine in Welkom was shot in both legs by one of the men before they fled in his vehicle.
"The man was driving along the Rosendal-Senekal road when he picked the men up," said Mophiring.
"One of the men then asked the driver to stop because he wanted to urinate. The man was asked to stop two more times and on the third stop, the three men pulled out firearms and ordered the driver to get out."
One of the men then shot the driver, took R1 000 and a cellphone from him, and they fled in his Nissan Skyline.
The man stopped another motorist who called the police.
He was admitted to the Dihlabeng hospital for treatment.
Mophiring said police were investigating.
