Johannesburg - A 31-year-old woman who was repeatedly raped and assaulted, managed to escape after being held overnight in her attacker's house, Northern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Captain Tshepo Mofokeng said the unidentified man confronted the woman as she was leaving a tavern in Galeshewe, Kimberley, on Sunday night and threatened her with a knife.

"He ordered her to accompany him to an open field where he raped and assaulted her," said Mofokeng.

"The man then took her to his house where he repeatedly raped her and then tried to strangle her."

On Monday morning the man left the house, leaving the woman inside.

She managed to escape and report the incident to police, said Mofokeng.

She was in a stable condition at home.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old woman managed to escape while being dragged into a shack in Galeshewe on Tuesday night.

"The man stopped the woman when she was returning from a shop.

"He tore her blouse and began to drag her into a shack but the woman struggled with the man and managed to escape and report the incident to police."

Mofokeng said police were investigating.
