Johannesburg - Scores of police have sealed off the popular coffee shop area at the Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg after an apparent bank robbery on Friday.

The normally busy coffee shops are deserted but a large crowd has gathered around the police tape.

Several ambulances are at the scene.

Police officers, many of them armed with automatic rifles. have been seen rushing in and out of an FNB branch.

One man at the scene said he heard "lots of gunshots" around 11:15 am in the mall area.

"I heard gunshots and saw people running all over the place," said the man who works at the African Craft Market.

The police were not available for comment.
