Louis Trichardt fights new name

Johannesburg - The Pretoria High Court dismissed an application on Thursday to have Makhado municipality's named changed back to Louis Trichardt, SABC news reported.

Makhado was a 19th century VhaVenda king and Louis Trichardt was a Voortrekker leader.

The application was brought by a group of cultural and civic organisations, farmers and political parties.

The group believed that the town's name was changed without proper consultation.

The respondents were the minister of arts and culture, the SA Geographical Names Council and the Makhado municipality.

It was unclear if and when an appeal will be lodged, the report said.
