Cops disperse school kids
14/09/2005 15:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Johannesburg police dispersed a crowd of pupils who were protesting on Wednesday over crimes against children.
Constable Sefako Xaba said leaders of the Congress of South African Students (Cosas) called the pupils out of their schools to protest outside the Wynberg magistrate's court after a father accused of shooting his daughter was released on bail.
"They feel the justice department has failed them," Xaba said.
Riot police were deployed to keep a watchful eye over the children who were singing, chanting, toyi-toying and "making a noise" in front of the court.
Xaba said the protesters were also angry about a 16-year-old girl who died in central Johannesburg after being thrown out of a window last week.
Cosas' provincial chairperson for Gauteng, Reginald Nkabinde, said he knew nothing about the march.
