20/09/2005 18:35 - (SA)
Pretoria - A man who stole a bicycle in the early hours of Tuesday in Pretoria became the victim of a hit-and-run while making his getaway, police said.
"Police received a call about a house-breaking in Sunnyside in which a bicycle had been stolen," said inspector Anton Breedt.
Neighbours reported the incident and the homeowner, who was not present at the time, said he would make a statement later at the police station.
"In the meantime, police received word of a possible murder in a hit-and-run accident at the corner of Bailey and Proes streets in Arcadia.
"Apparently a man on a bicycle had been knocked down by a car."
Breedt said the man was taken to hospital with neck and back injuries.
Owner identified the bike
"While police were at the station filing paperwork on the accident, the Sunnyside homeowner came in and identified the bicycle involved in the accident as the one stolen from his house."
Police placed the man under arrest for possession of possible stolen goods and he remains under hospital guard.
The driver of the vehicle that hit him over also has been arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving.
Breedt said it was possible that more charges against the driver would be added.
