Pretoria - Hijackers shot a twin from the East Rand in the head in the driveway of her parents' house in Kempton Park half an hour before she and her sister turned 25.
Christine Walker went to visit her parents, Errol and Miems Walker, in Susanna Street, Birchleigh North.
A neighbour said hijackers broke the window of Christine's car when she stopped in the driveway in front of her parents' home.
"I remember it was about 18:30 because it was just before 7de Laan began," he said.
The neighbour said they pulled her out of the car and threw her down on the paving.
"They held a gun to Christine's head and shot her. The bullet hit her behind the ear."
At first, the neighbour thought the children across the road were playing with fireworks, but then he and his family heard the dreadful screams.
Shot in front of her mom
Christine begged the hijackers in vain to leave her alone.
"The worst was that her mom struggled to unlock the safety gate to try and help her daughter. Christine was shot in front of her eyes," said the shocked neighbour.
The hijackers left Walker in a pool of blood in the driveway, jumped into her car and raced off.
Walker was taken to an East Rand hospital. Doctors fought for 5½ hours to save her life but at 23:30 on Friday the ventilator was switched off.
Police superintendent Eugene Opperman said that soon after the hijacking they had found Christine's car abandoned in Tembisa on the East Rand.
"It's not clear who or how many people are responsible for this," he said.
The Walkers were not home when reporters visited them on Monday.
Christine's twin, Charlene, is married and living in Pretoria.
Man murdered in townhouse
A resident in the area, Deon Alberts, said: "I'm absolutely furious. Crime just keeps rising. Where must we flee to?"
He said he regularly had to fend off burglars with his pistol and added that a month ago a man further down the street had been murdered in his townhouse. Opperman couldn't confirm this murder.
Lettie Petzer who lives near the murder scene also said there had been more crimes in the area recently.
